Easter and hot cross buns go hand-in-hand, and every year supermarkets get more and more creative when it comes to coming up with weird and wonderful combinations to make this sweet treat even more exciting.
From chocolate and orange to banoffee, you're no longer confined to a plain, sultana-filled treat. However, this year one iconic brand is staking it one step further – and people are freaking out.
Heinz's team of sauce connoisseurs have come up with a new limited-edition mayo just in time for Easter – Heinz [Seriously] Good Hot Cross Bun Mayo.
Combining the classic rich and creamy flavour of Heinz mayonnaise with toasted hot cross buns, swirled with sweet cinnamon spices and speckled with real fruit pieces, there no doubting the new product screams Easter.
Heinz fans may remember the company brought out a similar product in 2019, where they combined the flavours of Cadbury Creme Egg with mayonnaise.
Heinz recommends pairing their latest invention with your actual hot cross bun for an indulgent treat, or just enjoying it straight from the jar with a spoon – but people don't know what to think about the savoury and sweet combination.
Taking to Twitter, some mayo fans called it "blasphemy", while others simply asked "why" and were convinced it was an April Fools joke.
It's certainly not an April Fools joke, but Heinz is only producing 100 limited-editions jars of its Heinz [Seriously] Good Hot Cross Bun Mayo. To be in with a chance of winning one of them, you need to head to Heinz.co.uk and entering the #HotCrossBunMayo competition, which launches today, March 27.
The competition will run for one week only, and closes on April 2 – so you need to be quick.
Katharina Kern, Brand Manager at Heinz, said: "From delicious chocolate orange to crème egg, people love Heinz's sweet mayo combos as much as we love inventing new, eggs-citing products for our customers.
"So, to wish everyone a very hoppy Easter this year, we’re giving 100 lucky winners the chance to get their hands on our Heinz [Seriously] Good Hot Cross Bun Mayo."
