A MasterChef contestant has pushed the boundaries with his spin on the popular dish – mac and cheese.
Josh was competing in a challenge that would earn him a place in the top ten, and he decided to take a risk to achieve the goal. Half of the 14 hopefuls were tasked with creating a dish that they would serve at their own restaurant or pop-up, or feature in their own cookbook. This was all theoretical of course, as they are not there yet!
The Stratford-upon-Avon-based contestant decided to forgo using fancy cheeses and instead opted for cheese singles – as in the ones you may put in your burgers at a BBQ. Josh referred to them as ‘fake cheese.’ To compliment that rogue choice he went for evaporated milk.
The pasta was served alongside BBQ short rib, jalapeno cornbread, and pickled slaw.
Explaining his choice the 25-year-old told judges John Torode and Monica Galetti that mac and cheese was his ‘favourite dish in the world,’ and the ‘first dish I learnt to cook.’
Sadly, the sentimental choice and his ‘fake cheese’ wasn’t enough and he was kicked out of the competition, losing his chance to cook in a professional kitchen.
He also didn’t impress viewers, who were a little bit confused about his ingredients.
One person joked that he needed to face time behind bars for his choice: ‘Bro on MasterChef just made mac and cheese with condensed milk and plastic cheese only. Should have been put in jail on his way out.’
Another viewer suggested he went the wrong way about it if he wanted to get people to enjoy his dish. They began by quoting Josh, ‘I really wanted them to like my macaroni cheese’ before adding ‘Perhaps you should have made it properly instead of using condensed milk and plastic cheese?’
A third viewer got some sick-faced vomit emojis involved and asked a series of questions to communicate her shock: ‘Evaporated milk? Fake plastic cheese? On MasterChef?’
The world just wasn’t ready for Josh and his cheese slices yet.
Josh is not the only one to try something a little different – Vanessa combined blueberries, chocolate and mushrooms into a pasta dish.
Masterchef continues tonight on BBC at 8:30pm.
