A new soup kitchen opened its doors for the first time last weekend. North Cambridge Soup Kitchen at the Meadows Community Centre in Arbury will provide hot meals once a month, cooked by Mill Road convenience store Al-Amin.
It has been set up by Cambridgeshire-based charity Karim Foundation, which was registered in 2020 and aims to relieve poverty in the area. On the charity’s website, trustee Shahida Rahman said: “Everyone is welcome at our North Cambridge Soup Kitchen.
“The winter months are not far away now, and we hope to offer a safe and friendly space where anyone in Cambridge can join us for a hot meal and feel comfortable.”
The soup kitchen served residents for the first time on September 17. It will operate every third Sunday of the month between 11.30am and 1.30pm - on October 15, November 19, December 17 this year, and January 21, February 18 and March 17 next year.
Al-Amin is a halal grocery shop in Mill Road. It has run for over 25 years, and stocks food from around the world.
The Meadows Community Centre, where the service will operate, opened in May 2023. It includes a performance centre, café with outdoor terrace, nursery space, four meeting rooms, and electric vehicle charging spaces.2023-09-22T14:49:30Z dg43tfdfdgfd
